You need to understand that what is going on at the time is certainly a panic attack and you're not going to die from a heart attack. That in and of itself can help a lot. When a panic attack starts to come on keep telling yourself that it is only a panic attack, you will live through it after it is finished.

An easily implemented cure for panic attacks is a simple breathing technique. An easy tool to use is to put all of your concentration on your breathing and count while you are doing this. You can count to 10 and then begin again.

Concentrating on a wristwatch of a clock with a second hand can come in quite handy as a cure for panic attacks. Watch the sweeping hand and tell yourself, if you are not dead or going totally insane, once one minute passes you will be all right. Then focus on watching the second hand move and try not to think about anything else but the second hand. When a minute has passed, do it all over again.

Go for two minutes to distract you from the symptoms of the panic attack. Symptoms like your hands going numb, the feeling that you can't breathe, the thought that you are having a heart attack, the fear. The second hand of the clock is a great distraction tool you can easily focus on so you won't concentrate on the overwhelming thoughts.

While doing this you will still feel all of those feelings, but you need to focus with all your might on that second hand. Keep doing this until the panic attack subsides, and it eventually will. Keep reminding yourself that it is just a panic attack, not impending death, does help a lot also.

You can tell yourself things like I've been through this before and I know what to feel. This is only my mind pulling tricks on me, I'm going to make it though this. Find whatever you can to keep distracting yourself from the situation until the attack dies down.

If you just sit there and let the symptoms overwhelm you it will only make the situation seem more threatening. You need to remove yourself from a place of being consumed to a place of focusing on anything but the symptoms you are experiencing and put it on a cure for panic attacks.

Understand that a panic attack is a wave, and it will pass on its own as long as you don't re-enforce it by focusing on your fear and your symptoms. Put your concentration anywhere else, and ride it out. It will pass. Continually remind yourself that you are experiencing a panic attack and that you are not in harms way. It is just your mind messing with you. Everything will be alright.
