A person's genetic makeup plays an important role in their life. If your parents or grandparents had panic attacks, you are at a greater risk of having panic attacks. However, this does not mean that you will surely have panic attacks. It just means that you predisposed to the problem.
Certain genes are dormant, only becoming active when met with a specific environmental trigger. For example, studies have demonstrated that lung cancer may develop from a cancer-causing gene being triggered by cigarette smoke. If Sam hadn't smoked, his genes wouldn't have acted up. In the same way, your lifestyle may be more of a problem than your genes.
Lifestyle and Panic Attacks: Certain situations in life end up causing more stress than others. For example, an investment banker who works long hours under pressure and deadlines will face more stress compared to an elementary school teacher who loves his or her job. So, it is quite possible you are doing certain things in life that are causing your stress levels to increase. Maybe all you need to do is reduce your coffee intake, give up smoking and get sufficient rest to alleviate the problem of panic attacks.
Your Particular Circumstances: Even if you lead a healthy lifestyle and do not have a family history of panic attacks, certain situations might trigger an episode. If your life is stressful for a long period of time, it is the perfect setting for causing a panic attack without any apparent reason. Even a small incident could trigger a panic attack.
