Recognizing Symptoms Of Depression In Men

Millions of men suffer from Clinical Depression. This disease was once thought to be a woman's illness, but that could not be further from the truth. The symptoms of depression in men are very real and need to be treated. Men do not like to open up about their feelings, but it is necessary to be diagnosed properly.

It is harder for a man to admit that they may have an emotional disorder. They try to stay strong and feel that this is a weak illness. Many men often are in denial about what they are experiencing. Recognizing the signs of depression is critical in receiving the proper treatment.

Men experience different symptoms than women and it seems to be a bit harder to diagnose for them. Common signs are lowered self esteem, tiredness, and bouts of anger. Anger can be the most aggravating because it is often misplaced.

Men may experience a loss of sexual drive and this only adds to their feelings of worthlessness. They see this as a failure and an indication of their manhood. This could not be any further from the truth. It is a medical condition that is caused from their depression.

Men have a harder time expressing their feelings. Irritability is often at an all time high. They tend to lash out at those they love. Alcohol and drug abuse is common and this causes further complications.

Men are four times more likely to commit suicide than women. It is imperative to seek medical care if you have suicidal thoughts. Depression will only worsen if left untreated. Seeking help is definitely not a sign of weakness. Instead, it takes strength to get assistance.

It is important to remember that depression is a medical condition and one that needs to be treated. It is not something that only women experience and it is definitely not a failure in any way. There is no shame in seeking medical treatment.
