How to Overcome Panic Attacks
What is panic attack and why does it happen? Most importantly, how can it be overcome?
What is It?
When our brain perceives a threat although none is evident, it sends out threat signals to our body. Such threat signals will trigger anxiety and fear, thus, a panic attack occurs. It is a psychological thing that can suddenly happen for no apparent reason. Help will definitely be needed to combat panic attacks, particularly when these attacks occur intensely and in repeated episodes.
What Symptoms Does It Have?
When you panic, your heart, your breathing, even your muscles respond to it. You'll have a rapid, unstable heart beat, you breathe heavily thinking that you'll run out of oxygen and your muscles would stiffen and shake. Sometimes, you'll feel that your chest is in pain. Because of these, you'll feel that you're trapped and can't get out of it.
When you consider the signs and symptoms of a panic attack, it can be seriously mistaken for a heart attack or even a mild stroke. Therefore, you should never disregard or ignore such symptoms. You or someone you know should immediately seek medical attention as it may not be a harmless panic attack after all.
What Can Cause It?
What are the triggers of panic attack? Unbelievably, it can be genetic or hereditary. Others can be the result of a medical condition. It can even be caused by the medications and drugs that you are prescribed with. Pregnancy in women can also cause panic attacks. And yes, stress, known as the silent killer, is the most common cause of panic attacks.
What to Avoid?
Beverages with caffeine, such as coffee, tea or soda, should be avoided. Caffeine is a stimulant that can worsen a panic attack. Alcohol and smoking should also be avoided as they can cause breathing and blood pressure problems. Such problems can result to frequent episodes of panic attacks.
Is There a Way to Overcome It?
Yes there is. First is assurance. When you go to your doctor and you pass all your lab tests, then you can assure yourself that there's nothing wrong with your organs like the heart, lungs, brain and your entire body.
Never let your mind dwell on the thoughts of a panic attack as it will most likely occur. Whenever you feel an oncoming panic attack, settle yourself down, relax and remain calm. Assess your situation logically and condition your brain that there is no actual threat or danger to be frightened of.
Seek professional help for your panic attacks when it gets worse, or even before it does. Also, always have someone nearby to help calm you down and get you through your panic attack episodes.
