What Causes Depression, and How Do We Deal With It?

by JOHN PATTERSON

A lot of us have very fast-paced lives, and the feeling of stress from careers or family situations from time to time is not uncommon. Stress is a normal human emotion, although people do cope differently when in high stress levels.

The people that are in a depressive state of mind will find it very difficult to gain back their normal happiness feeling. A depressed person could awake in a good mood, then a single conversation or phone call can change their whole day for the worst. Trying to cope with this can become virtually impossible for some people.

There are many contributing factors in depression and serious mood swings. These can include lifestyle issues, general health and genetics to name but a few. The signs of depression can be very clear as people's moods can change almost in an instant, and those who were once outgoing and happy can seem introverted and silent. Depression can also make a person feel exhausted and tired, leaving them with little motivation. The things which used to give them pleasure now have no interest to them whatsoever.

If you or someone you know is suffering from some or all of these symptoms, they are most likely in a state of depression. Many people who need help or want someone to speak with, are afraid or embarrassed to ask for help, so you may have to approach the person yourself. It can be very hard to escape a bout of depression, and people may feel that consulting with a psychiatrist or a therapist may be the only way to get the right help that is needed. A prescription could be given by a doctor to help control the symptoms of depression, but do remember that is all they can do i.e. control the symptoms.

To effect a permanent cure to depression, it is imperative that the root cause, or causes, of the depression are found. By then working on those causes, a permanent cure can be effected. Do bear in mind again, that prescriptive medication will treat the symptoms alone, it will neither treat the root causes nor will it help to get rid of those causes.
