Anxiety and Insomnia

You have been tossing and turning all night. You want to get a decent night's sleep but it has proven to be completely elusive. This is not something that has just occurred out of the blue. Your sleep disturbances have been occurring for months now. Come to think of it, you have experienced these same problems in the past for several years. What is the cause of it? If you are like many people, the root cause of your sleeplessness could be anxiety.

Is this possible? Yes, it is indeed. In fact, if you're concerned about your finances, your job, or even some other personal matter to the point where you can no longer enjoy a good night's rest, then there's a strong possibility that you're suffering from anxiety induced insomnia. And, before you try to brush this off as being nothing more that unpleasant, you need to know that if you continue to go without enough sleep, there can be serious consequences.

Imagine not having a decent night's sleep in over two weeks. Would you think you would be effective on the job? More than likely, such problems could completely undermine your standing at work. Your home life could also be seriously affected as well. Excess tension and irritability can undermine your relationships with friends and family. That is why it is important to deal with the situation with the obvious intention of reversing its impact.

One question often asked even though we know anxiety can cause sleeplessness is why does this happen? Basically the hyperactivity and restlessness you have are the reason these occur together. The mind races through so many thoughts that it makes it impossible to relax long enough to sleep. This is what ends up causing sleeplessness which must be dealt with by anxiety sufferers.

There are numerous ways to reduce anxiety in order to eliminate insomnia. In particular, one of the most beneficial things to do is to avoid consuming any substance that will contribute to your anxiety. For example, you should avoid caffeine and other stimulants if you are having trouble sleeping. Bear in mind, it's been proven time and time again that these substances are known to increase and contribute to anxiety.

Frequent and regular exercise is also of vital importance, primarily because anxiety is interconnected with excessive amounts tension and of course, exercise can greatly reduce tension. In fact, just as one can use exercise to burn up calories when you want to loose weight, so too can you use exercise to burn up tension.

Another way of reducing anxiety is by controlling your breathing. This will help to reduce the tension and anxiety you are feeling. When you breath deeply it slows down the heart and calms the body. This is beneficial in helping to regain sleep patterns that are normal.

As any mental health professional can attest to, anxiety on its own is a very serious problem but when it's accompanied by sleeplessness, the seriousness can escalate dramatically. Fortunately, there are various ways to overcome both anxiety and sleeplessness, in order to regain control of your life once again.
