Useful Tips To Stop Anxiety Attacks

by Linda Buechting

As most therapists will tell you, one of the keys to making an anxiety episode controllable is to learn how to work your way through the attack itself. The paralyzing worry that accompanies an acute stress or panic episode can be so strong and intense, attempting to describe these feelings to someone who has never experienced them is virtually impossible. Here are some helpful tips to stop fear attacks.

The first thing you have to do is realize you are having a panic episode. Although this sounds elemental and almost pointless, the quantity of sufferers who believe what they are experiencing is something other than anxiety is sort of large. They may show up at the doctor's office or maybe the ER making claims to be having a heart attack, stroke, overdose on some stimulant or maybe anaphylactic shock. Once a sufferer realizes they're indeed having an anxiety attack, they can accept it and begin to work through it and realize that it will pass.

You should do something physical in order to take your mind off the assault, at least for the present. Anything that needs effort such as cleaning, exercise, walking or cooking is extremely advantageous and offers a point of concentration other than the assault itself. Activity, particularly activity that needs exertion, releases endorphins. These are mood changing hormones that will calm and relax a sufferer with a sense of euphoria. Physical activity will also negate any feelings of helplessness that can go with the attack and empower the person by doing something that's productive.

If you've been going through fear attacks for any time period, you have probably developed a support group. It may be an informal group such as oldsters, siblings, friends or fellow sufferers ; anyone who understands what you are going through. Reach out to these folk for the help and understanding you want at the time. You aren't trying to find pity or even sympathy, just somebody you can talk to about and during the attack. If you are someone who is abashed of their anxiety and has hidden the truth about your afflicted by friends and family, it's time to talk to them about the entire experience. Keeping this a secret only makes things worse so seek out someone to confide in, even if it is via the internet, in a bulletin board or forum particularly about anxiousness and panic.

Taking medication should be a final resort measure. Since drugs just mask symptoms they frequently return when the drugs wears off and can even be more intense. The majority of the anti-anxiety drugs like Xanax and Klonopin have some pretty heavy side effects that you most likely need to avoid by not taking the medication.

By realizing when you are having an anxiety episode and accepting it for what it is you can then begin to calm yourself with physical activity. As you start to unwind then is the time to contact a support person to chat about what you are feeling and what's going through your intelligence. These steps can then become beneficial tips to stop tension attacks.
